dandelion is vetting submissions for Issues 36.1 & 36.2. Send us your innovative literature & art. We are accepting general submissions on an ongoing basis, as well as work for our Un-birthday contest.
Issue 36.1: dandelion's 35th Un-Birthday Contest: the writing contest that makes words do more work!
First Prize: $350
Second Prize: $175
Third Prize: $75
Honourable Mentions: Swell Dandeliongifts
Send us a story, essay, or poems that relate—however tangentially—to the idea of the un-birthday. Consider, as inspiration, the following excerpts from Alice & Humpty Dumpty’s conversation about un-birthdays in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland:
'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean--neither more nor less.'
'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master—that's all.'… 'They've a temper, some of them-- particularly verbs, they're the proudest—adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs however, I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! That's what I say!'
'When I make a word do a lot of work like that,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'I always pay it extra.'
Maximum length: 3000 words, fiction & non-fiction.3 poems (maximum of 10 pages)
