About Us

The first issue of dandelion appeared in 1975, and in 1979 Dandelion Magazine Society was incorporated to oversee the magazine’s publication. In 1999, the poet Fred Wah spearheaded a move of the magazine into the hands of graduate students in the Department of English at the University of Calgary as an educational opportunity.  While connected to the U of C, Dandelion Magazine Society receives no funding from the University, and remains a community institution with a Board made up of local business and artistic people.  Since its inception this Calgary-based society has published innovative prose, poetry, and visual arts from writers and artists of local, national, and international renown. Dandelion Magazine Society also works to encourage and support local writers and artists by providing venues for publication and performance, and through educational workshops and seminars.

Dandelion Magazine Society is a non-profit organization that gratefully acknowledges the support of the Department of English and the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Calgary, Calgary Arts Development, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage, the generous assistance provided by private donors, and the continued enthusiasm of its local, national, and international subscribers. We also acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Canada Magazine Fund toward our editorial and production costs. dandelion is also a proud member of the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association and Magazines Canada.
